Camden County

Custody/Visitation Awareness Seminar

This Parent Education Program is for all litigants of matters who have issues about minor children. In many of the cases there is a pending application regarding custody and/or parenting time, and mediation or family therapy is ordered to assist the litigants in resolving their dispute. The program is four hours in length, offered every Thursday from 10AM until 2PM at The Parenting Center (Family Division Annex, Parkade Building, First Floor, 518 Market Street, Camden) and one evening each month at a location outside of the city. The topics covered in large and small group discussions and role-play include identifying emotions; what it means to be a parent; the positive and negative aspects of being a residential and non-residential parent; court procedures and a review of the mediation process. The film "Don't Divorce the Children" is shown which presents the impact of parent's behavior and decisions on their children. This course should be required for all persons presenting children's issues to the Court and is considered to be a mediation orientation program as authorized in Court Rule 1:40-5(b).

Family Therapy

Family therapy is offered for particular matters in which the Court requires feedback regarding the case. The determination for a case being referred to therapy as opposed to mediation is made by the judge or the staff handling the matter and is dependent upon the specifics of that case. There are eight Family Specialists on staff, each of whom holds a Master's degree in their particular field. Cases are scheduled based on the availability of the Family Specialists.

Choices for Children

This program is designed primarily for high-conflict parents who come to court repeatedly regarding parenting time issues. A prerequisite for attendance includes previous attendance at the Custody/Visitation Awareness Seminar. This program will be held one Saturday each month from 9:15 AM to 12:15 PM at the Family Division Annex, Parkade Building, First Floor, 518 Market Street, Camden. The topics which will be presented in this program include: "Conflict" (what is it, why deal with it, how to resolve it); "Communication Between Parents" (effective communication helps kids develop a positive self-image and strengthens the parent-child bond, expression and acceptance of feelings and impact on behavior, suggested techniques in improving communication). Parents attend upon mandatory referral by the judges or voluntarily by requesting a further opportunity to learn how to minimize or avoid their ongoing conflicts. This program is offered simultaneous to the "My Family Has Changed" Children's Workshop so that parents may bring their children in to participate in a beneficial program as well.

"My Family Has Changed" Children's Workshop

"My Family Has Changed" is our voluntary program for children who have experienced changes in their family situation or are affected by parenting time disputes. Facilitated by mental health professionals associated with VIRTUA Health Systems, the program is three hours in length and offered one Saturday morning each month for children between the ages of 6 and 17 years. The children are separated into three age groups and proceed through a rotation of three sessions within the workshop. The sessions include: "All My Feelings are O.K.," "It's Not My Fault" and "Taking Care of Me." The children work with an art therapist, drawing pictures of how they feel and participate in question and answer sessions, game-play and role-play. The presentations focus on their experiences and feelings, and children find comfort and support in having the opportunity to be heard and to learn that they are not alone.

Young Father's Group for Minorities

A new program offered to minority fathers up to age 26 offering parent education, counseling, positive relationship building, and mentoring. Segments are eight weeks in length and each session is four hours long. Funded through federal grant monies, the program is facilitated by Naim Muslim of Foundation 2000, Inc. It is held on Saturdays at The Parenting Center (Family Division Annex, Parkade Building, Camden).

Supervised Visitation Program

This service is available by Court order only in cases involving severe domestic violence, risk of flight, alleged substance abuse, alleged sexual abuse or the re-establishment of a relationship, this service is available for a period of eight weeks at Family Counseling Services in Camden or Voorhees. All arrangements are made by court staff.
